Historically, the Romans managed to exact a terrible toll on Arminius and the Cherusci.  With successive defeats at Long Bridges, Idistaviso, and the Angrivarii Barrier, the myth of Arminius' military superiority was crushed.  With the recapture of two of the three lost Eagle standards, a large degree of Roman pride was restored.

Germanicus would return to a hero's welcome in Rome.  He was awarded a Triumph - the last ever allowed to a non-emperor.  Arminius, by contrast, led the Cherusci on an exodus to the east - far, they hoped, from any future Roman menace.
^
In an ironic twist of fate, both men would die in A.D. 19.  Each, it seems, was killed by their own kind.  But while news of Germanicus' death shocked and dismayed the Roman people, news of Arminius' would bring the Germans a sense of relief.
^
In war, the Romans demanded the annihilation of either themselves, or their enemies, and because Arminius was never brought to Rome in chains, historians have since labeled Germanicus' campaigns as indecisive raids.  The Germans who suffered through them, however, would forever tremble when they thought of Germanicus on the Rhine.
